Amitabh Bachchan ‘counted’ in Census

Mumbai, May 11: Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan was Tuesday ‘counted’ in the ongoing Census operations here, an official said.

An official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which is spearheading the drive, said that Bachchan and his family were counted at their ‘Pratiksha’ bungalow in Juhu Tuesday afternoon.

“Bachchan and his family very enthusiastically took part in the Census by answering all the questions pertaining to the Census. They also provided all relevant information needed for the Unique Identity Card also which is being handled by the BMC,” the official said.

Bachchan and his family members – wife Jaya, son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya – also made a few enquiries about the Unique Identity Card scheme with the BMC officials who visited his bungalow for the Census.

The BMC has taken up counting of Mumbaikars since May 1, starting with Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan and his family, Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and his family, Mayor Shraddha Jadhav and her family and other top dignitaries and officials.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Manisha Patankar-Mhaiskar said that Mumbai has been divided into 27,617 blocks, each block having around 150 families, which are currently being counted.

The counting of approximate 14 million Mumbaikars, spread over the city and suburbs in the eastern and western corridors, will continue till June 15.
