Americans kill Afghan tribal leader

Kabul, January 19: The bodyguards of a US commander have shot dead a tribal leader in southern Afghanistan as Afghan civilian casualties continue to mount in the war-ravaged country.

The security guards fired on the old man after he threw a stone at the US commander in Afghanistan’s Helmand province.

The American commander was injured in the Wednesday incident.

The elderly man has been identified as Meraj al-Din Khan.

US-led foreign forces have killed large numbers of civilians in Afghanistan since the beginning of the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.

Afghan officials have frequently condemned the US-led troops over the high number of civilian casualties.
