Amend Anti-Defection Act: YSRCP urges Centre

YSRCP leader B Karunakar Reddy today said Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu should try to keep his comments against defections and initiate immediate action.

Speaking to media persons at party office here, Karunakar demanded that Venkaiah should see that the Centre bring a related Act get amended to prevent defections and take spontaneous action disqualifying those switching loyalties. Since the BJP-led NDA Government has full majority, there will be no problem for the Centre to make necessary amendments to the Act, he felt.

The YSRCP leader further said there was a need to repeal the powers of Speaker to take or not to take action on the issue. Karunakar Reddy said YSRCP chief YS Jaganmohan Reddy appealed to Election Commission to strip the Speaker of the powers to act on defections. The membership of SPY Reddy elected MP from Nandyal on YSRCP ticket was still on despite defecting to the ruling party, he said.

He alleged that Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was ridiculing democracy and failing to protect law and order. He said a war like situation was prevailing in two Godavari districts due to inefficiency of the government. The YSRCP leader expressed dismay that Chandrababu Naidu should have offered Home Minister post to somebody as N China Rajappa does not deserve it in the wake of collapse of law and order in the State.
