New Delhi: The leading E-commerce giant is all set to sell locally made food items after receiving government approval to invest $500 million food retailing in India eight months ago.
According to a report by Economic Times, the sale will be done through an Amazon’s wholly-owned subsidiary, competing with BigBasket and Grofers, from March.
Amazon had got FDA approval in July to invest $500 million over the next five years to sell food that is sourced, produced and packaged locally under its own private label. The company is planning to sell these items online as well as through physical stores.
However, the government considers allowing Amazon to sell personal care items, limited to 25% of their total sales.
The e-commerce company to also move to some of its Amazon Seller Services warehouses to Amazon Retail India and gearing up to get Food Safety and Standards Authority of Indian licensing.
