Amar files bail plea, HC issues notice to police

New Delhi, October 04: Four days after a special court denied him relief in the cash-for-vote scam, Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh moved his bail plea before the Delhi High Court on Monday and sought respite citing medical reasons.

Refusing to pass any immediate order, the court issued a notice to the Delhi Police and sought their reply within three days. The court posted the matter for October 12.

Singh had to move the High Court after his interim and regular bail pleas were on September 28 dismissed by the trial court, which had noted that his role was “major” in the entire episode aimed at “disgracing” parliamentary democracy.

“Despite his (Singh’s) fairly grave medical conditions, the trial court denied him bail,” senior counsel Dinesh Mathur, appearing for Singh, told the court and urged it to hear his interim bail plea on Wednesday.

Justice Ajit Bharihoke, however, refused to oblige the counsel and directed AIIMS to file a fresh medical report on Singh’s medical condition by October 12.

The MP has been seeking bail on grounds of health which, as per the last AIIMS report submitted to the trial court, has been showing “overall improvement”, although his renal condition as assessed as prone to infection needed constant monitoring.

Singh was arrested on September 6 after he appeared before a court in response to summons for his alleged involvement in the scam.
