Police have arrested former actress and Green Peace activists when they staged a dharna at the Charminar in the old city on Monday.
While Amala and others have said that they have staged this demonstration to create awareness in connection with the ongoing International Bio Diversity conference, police said they were arrested for hanging banners on the Charminar.
Amala and others have hung banners to charminar demanding stopping of deforestation and coal mining, without proper permission. As Charminar is a heritage building, police said no banner should be hung to it.
Speaking to the media, Amala said that the Prime Minister himself has given permission for 13 coal blocks and that coal mining was rendering tribals and animals shelterless. She said this was violation of their democratic rights. She said coal mining was also causing extinction of anials.
Police have shifted Amala and Green Peace members to the Charminar police station. Hero Nagarjuna, husband of Amala was informed of the arrest.
