Alwal citizens live in constant fear of rains

Hyderabad, November 07: Rainfall. The very word causes many residents of Alwal circle to shiver with fear. Not that they dislike rainfall, but the slush and inundation threat it brings. Encroachments along the main Alwal sewerage nala have blocked its free flow, which results in water flooding the houses, what many residents describe as a dreadful experience.

RBI Colony, Shiva Nagar and Sai Datta Colony are the most affected localities during the rainy season. Because of an improper nala system, the approach routes to a couple of colonies are in pretty bad shape.

As of now, there is no proper road between Shivanagar Colony and Prudential Bank Colony.

Construction of a culvert over the nala, though an immediate requirement to connect both the colonies, has been neglected by officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

With no other alternative, locals are forced to cross the nala, by walking over temporary pipes existing on the nala. There have been several occasions when residents including school students have fallen into the nala while trying to cross it.

“Walking over the nala is a nightmarish experience. Though we have been chasing the GHMC officials relentlessly, our problem remains unsolved. We want the GHMC to construct proper culverts with fencing along the nala to avert accidents. Besides officials should take measures to remove all the encroachments along the nala,” E Janardhan, resident of RBI Colony told Expresso.

Though the Engineering wing of Alwal circle is aware about the problem, they have not taken any action against the contractor, who was supposed to start work several months ago.

DRINKING WATER CRISIS

In view of the GHMC elections, though the condition of water supply has improved from past few days, it was only limited to a few areas. There are many localities which go without the supply of safe drinking water.

Pipelines for the supply of drinking water at Kowkur village were laid nearly three years ago, but water is not supplied till date. “We are forced to depend on water tankers which come according to their convenience.

Moreover, water tankers come only after we make innumerable phone calls to municipal authorities,” Sunit Kumar, a resident of Kowkur said.

DRAINAGE

There are many localities, where a proper drainage system is absent and residents are forced to depend on septic tanks to collect the sewerage.
