Allegedly killed over Facebook status

Australia, September 02: A WOMAN was murdered by her partner after changing her Facebook status, a British court has been told.

Hayley Jones was found dead in her home by her children after being strangled and stabbed by her partner Brian Lewis after she changed her relationship status on Facebook, the prosecution claimed.

It was alleged Lewis had threatened to kill Ms Jones rather than lose her to another man, the BBC reports.

Ms Jones had begun opening up on her personal life on social networking site Facebook and had set her relationship status to “married” despite not actually being Lewis’s wife.

He said: “Hayley started to expand her social life and was spending a lot of time on internet sites, in particular Facebook.

“She was quite secretive about this, preventing Lewis from using the site and turning the computer off. It is quite clear this rankled with him.

“On 2 March, she changed her Facebook relationship status from married to single and she made it clear their relationship was over,” Mr Evans said.

The jury heard Lewis thought the relationship was in trouble due to the amount of time Ms Jones spent online.
