Durban, September 02: A man suspected of having robbed officials of the SA Social Security Agency of a huge sum of money at the pension pay point in Nkandla was shot dead by police, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.
Spokesperson Mbongiseni Mdlalose said: “Philani Nzuza, 30, was killed by the police on Tuesday. He was wanted for four murder cases and three for robbery. Police believed he was involved in the pension pay point robbery in Nkandla.”
A total of 13 people, most of them pensioners, were injured during a shoot-out at the Social Security Agency (SASSA) pay point in Nkandla in April.
Two guards were wounded and 11 pensioners were hit. One of them was left in a critical condition.
“Nzuza was driving his taxi when he was shot by the police. When the policed approached him, he allegedly fired shots at them and the police returned fire. He died on the spot.”
A 9mm pistol was found on the scene, said Mdlalose.
