Allahabad: 144 kgs opium seized, two arrested

Allahabad : The Government Railway Police (GRP) on Monday arrested two opium smugglers from Rambagh Railway Station in Allahabad.

The cops have recovered 144 Kgs of opium from the arrested individuals. The seized opium was being taken from Malda in West Bengal to Allahabad.

The contraband substance, which was kept in a parcel, was recovered by the police during a routine search.

It has to be noted that Malda is one of the few places in the country where opium is cultivated under license from the government.

Legal cultivation of opium for medicinal purposes is allowed in India under strict licensing conditions in selected areas.

Legal cultivation is permissible within the ambit of United Nations, Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs 1961. (ANI)
