All parties favour “No Detention” method in school study; Srihari to send report to Centre

Hyderabad: Telangana Government is all set to go ahead with its “no detention method” in school education system from 1st class to 10th class as leaders of all political parties favored it to ensure that the most of the poor students study in Government Schools should not get discouraged with detention.
Almost all the leaders urged the government to initiate steps to improve educational standards, recruit trained staff, protection to girls at hostels and schools, provision of basic amenities like drinking water, toilets, compound walls, adequate hostels and need for continuous monitoring by officials at districts to improve quality of teaching as per Right to Education Act. The leaders opined that since about 80 per cent of SC, ST and BC students study in the government schools and detention system may add to the ratio of dropouts.
Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari chaired the meeting at School Education Commissionerate here on Saturday. Speaking to the media later, Srihari said the State government would send its opinion to the Centre after Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao returns from his China trip on September 16. About Rs 250 crore will be spent for strengthening basic facilities in the schools and provide protection to girls like Kasturba, Model and Residential Schools by end of this month and steps have begun to provide water, toilets, compound wall. With a focus on improving standards of education, officials were asked to adopt and monitor schools at districts frequently to improve standards. About 50 per cent of schools got toilet facilities and same will be provided to the rest soon, he said.
The all-party meeting necessitated followed by a recently held meeting called by the Centre a few weeks ago that ended up in different opinions on this key issue. While some States pitched for the detention, others vehemently opposed it. Consequently, the Centre directed States to send their opinions to take a final call. It is likely that the Centre may go in favour of majority of opinions from the States which may favour no detention system.
Party-wise leaders attended the meeting include Sudhakar Reddy (TRS), Peddi Reddy (TD), Dr J Geetha Reddy (Congress), Ramchandra Rao (BJP), Palla Venkat Reddy (CPI), Ch. Sitaramulu (CPM), Ayesha Begum (MIM). (NSS)
