Congress made great achievements by winning both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts, in the city corporation elections of Gulbarga ahead of the Parliamentary elections. This boosted the morale of Congress, while BJP faced defeat by a huge margin in the elections held in Gulbarga City on Wednesday.
26-year-old, Aliya Shireen, was chosen as Mayor who was elected from ward number 24. She defeated her BJP rival Arti Tiwari. Congress Corporator Mahesh Hosurkar elected on Congress ticket from ward number 55 defeated Shivu Swamy of the BJP to become the Deputy Mayor.
Both Ms. Shireen and Mr. Hosurkar received 37 votes each, while their opponents Arti Tiwari and Shivu Swamy polled 17 votes each. City Corporation Gulbarga has 61 members which include the votes of the six legislators and an MP.
Municipal Administration and Waqf Minister Qamarul Islam also voted in the election. Although Congress does not have clear majority in Corporation but it is believed that the popularity and prudence of noted public leader Mr. Qamarul Islam helped the Congress candidates win the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
