Aligarh Muslim University student shot dead inside campus

Aligarh: A student of the Aligarh Muslim University was shot dead by motorcycle-borne armed persons inside the varsity’s campus, triggering protest by students, police said on Saturday.

Alamgir, a student leader and a final year student of Bachelor of Social Work (BSW), was shot at on the main road near the varsity’s Chemistry department by the attackers last evening.

He was rushed to the JN Medical College, where he succumbed to his injuries, police said.

As news spread, agitated students converged at the hospital and blocked entry to its emergency services department for several hours.

A police report was filed at the Civil Lines police station in which three persons Rehan Azmi, Shadab and Munir were named.

AMU Vice-Chancellor Lt Gen (retd) Zameer Uddin Shah in a statement today said, “Some mischievous elements are deliberately trying to vitiate the atmosphere in the AMU campus. Today, a message was circulated on social media announcing that the ‘Ghaibana Namaz-e-Janaza’ (funeral prayer in absentia) will be held in front of my residence this afternoon.

“This was clearly an attempt to whip up emotions on this issue, but we succeeded in thwarting the designs of such mischievous elements and managed to defuse the situation.”

“We are deeply grieved…We are determined to nab the perpetrators of this crime. We are also determined to confront those forces who are trying their utmost to force a sine die closure of the institution,” he added.

All classes remained suspended today in view of the yesterday’s incident, according to a senior varsity official.
