Alert citizens foil daylight robbery

Two alert citizens foiled a robbery bid by four bike borne thieves, who tried to flee with a bag of diamonds and gold worth Rs 1.29 crore near Wadala in central Mumbai today, the police said. The accused were speeding away after snatching a bag when the victim raised an alarm alerting two people who chased them and managed to retrieve the bag, though the thieves escaped. The incident took place around 3 pm near Saat Rasta area when Sheikh Mahmood, a delivery boy for a city-based based jeweller, was trying to catch a taxi near Hari Masjid to go to Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) from where he was scheduled to board a train to New Delhi. While he was walking, four men on two bikes came near him. One of the men hit him, causing him to drop the bag, which the other accused picked up. “Mehmood raised an alarm, which alerted two locals, Jitesh Shinde and Kailash Kamble, who chased them on their own motorcycle. They finally caught up with the accused near Barkhatil Naka after a four-kilometre chase. A minor scuffle took place after which the accused dropped the bag and fled,” a police officer at RAK Marg police station said. PTI
