Akbarabadi Masjid of Moghal era unearthed

A Masjid of Moghal era, which was demolished by British, has been discovered at a few steps from Jama Masjid. According to locals the Masjid is Akbarabadi Mosque demolished by the British in 1857. The archeological Survey of India believes that the monument might have been constructed in 17th century, the period in which Red Fort was also build.

The site in Matia Mahal, near Daryaganj, is swarmed by the visitors to have a glimpse of the remains of the historical mosque since the first proofs of the historical structure were dug up.

The fact that the area where the Masjid is unearthed is very near to Jama Masjid and Red Fort and the Chinese porcelain and glaze pottery exhumed from the site, clearly indicate that the mosque belong to the golden age of Moghal empire.

The book authored by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan also contains the maps which clearly show the structure of Akbarabadi mosque. Moreover a 10 meter wide wall has also been discovered from the ground which is supposed to be the wall of prayer enclosure.
