Galle, Aug 14 : Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane set a new world record as he became the first non-wicketkeeper in the history of the game to take eight catches in a single Test match. He achieved the milestone in the first Test of the three-match series against Sri Lanka in Galle on Friday.
The 27-year-old surpassed the likes of Greg Chappell, Hasan Tillakaratne, Stephen Fleming and Mathew Hayden who all had claimed seven catches.
Rahane caught Rangana Herath (1) off Amit Mishra’s delivery in the final session of play to complete the feat of eight catches.
Sri Lanka set a 176-run target for India after the hosts were bundled out for 367 in their second innings, thanks to Dinesh Chandimal’s magnificent 162 not out. (ANI)
