New Delhi, Nov 19: The security force guarding the ‘high threat perception’ zone Delhi airport is planning to boost its security measures in and around the area, ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
Soon, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel stationed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport will have at their disposal sophisticated weapons like MP5 guns, Glock pistols and sniper rifles.
The CISF, which guards the country’s most sensitive airport, is also in the process of forming a special crack commando team.
While the weapons are in the acquisition stage, sources said a special refresher course for the commandoes has already begun.
With this, the Delhi airport has become the first in the country whose security agency has been provided sophisticated weapons, which are currently used by the National Security Guards and CISF’s special security group that provides protection to VVIPs.
Senior CISF officials said the efforts were meant to counter any terrorist threat at the time of the Games an important international event that will have a major impact on the country’s image on the world stage.
The IGI airport already has five quick reaction CISF teams (trained in anti-terrorist and anti-hijacking measures) and the advanced crack commando teams will bolster the security system, officials said.
“The MP5 guns have already been procured. The process is on for others. Our commandos are trained; a refresher course is going on for these new weapons,” the official said.
