Airline crew member charged with smuggling drugs through London hub

London, July 22:A cabin crew member of Ghana International Airways has been charged in Britain with attempting to smuggle cocaine with an estimated street value of
98,000 pounds (161,000 dollars) through London’s Gatwick airport.

Kwaku Asante Ayirebi, a 30-year-old Ghanaian national, was remanded in custody after appearing at Mid Sussex Magistrates’ Court near Gatwick Wednesday and will have to appear in court again on September 2.

Officers from the UK Border Agency (UKBA) discovered the drugs, weighing about two kilos, in baggage that had arrived on a Ghana International Airways flight from Accra Tuesday.

“Crew members are subject to the same customs checks as any other person when entering the UK,” a customs spokesman at Gatwick airport said.
