AIIMS is the premier medical college in India .The Opposition JD- U on Wednesday demanded immediate steps to check discrimination against MBBS students belonging to SC/ ST and backward communities at AIIMS and asked the government as to why recommendations of various committees in this regard were not implemented.
Raising the issue in the Rajya Sabha during Zero Hour, Ali Anwar Ansari ( JD- U) said there have been complaints of discrimination against students from SC/ ST and backward categories at AIIMS and pointed out that Anil Kumar Meena, an ST student who was a topper of the Rajasthan Board, had committed suicide in February.
The Thorat committee, which conducted a probe into the charges of discrimination on caste basis, found these allegations correct and asked the AIIMS administration to take action after identifying the guilty, Ansari said.
Even after 63 years of Independence the bias against SC and ST continue even though provisions are available for prosecution .
He said a Member of Parliament Karan Singh Yadav, who also conducted an inquiry into the matter, also found the allegations true and had recommended action.
