New Delhi, April 23: Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) late Friday approached the police after a verbal duel between hospital staff and a relative of national-level volleyball player Arunima Sinha, whose leg was amputated after she was pushed out of a running train last week.
The AIIMS called the Safdarjung police station, after which the matter was settled, but no formal complaint was registered.
“Her brother-in-law came with a large group of people, saying they want to meet Arunima. The guard tried to tell them that nobody is allowed to meet her as she underwent surgery sometime back. But he did not listen to him and started shouting,” AIIMS Trauma Centre head M.C. Misra told IANS.
After that, the hospital dialed the police control room number and a team reached the trauma centre in south Delhi.
“The matter was finally settled. The problem is that every day this man comes with large number of politicians. There is a strict restriction on people allowed to meet Arunima as it could spread infection,” he said.
Delhi Police also confirmed that they received a complaint and the matter was settled.
Arunima underwent surgery Friday. Doctors applied a vacuum cleaning device to drain infectious tissue from the amputated leg.
“The procedure will help in healing of the leg and she is doing fine,” Misra added.
Doctors said that psychological counselling is also helping Arunima and two more operations — one on the amputated leg and the other to fix the broken bones of her second leg — will be done next week.
Arunima was pushed out of the general compartment of the Padmawati Express near Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh April 11 while resisting a chain-snatching attempt by some hoodlums as she was travelling from Lucknow to Delhi.
She was brought to the AIIMS Trauma Centre Monday night (April 18) after a serious infection was noticed in the amputated leg, for which she underwent a second round of surgery at Lucknow’s prestigious King George Medical College — now upgraded to the Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University.
