AIFF suspends Mohun Bagan coach for 8 matches, fined 10 lakh

Kolkata :The All India Football Federation today suspended Mohun Bagan coach Sanjoy Sen for eight months and slapped a fine of Rs 10 lakh for making derogatory statements against the AIFF.

Sen had lashed out at the AIFF saying it has been “sold out” after his request for rescheduling of an I-League match in January was ignored by the apex football body.

“Mr. Sanjoy Sen, Head Coach, Mohun Bagan, is charged for making derogatory statements against AIFF. Sanjoy Sen, is suspended for 8 (eight) matches & a fine of Rs. 10 Lakhs is imposed on him as provided in Article 58 of the AIFF Disciplinary Code,” the AIFF stated in a release.

Besides, it has also suspended and fined Shillong Lajong’s goalkeeping coach Gumpe Rime.

“Mr. Gumpe Rime, GK Coach of Shillong Lajong FC is suspended for 4 (four) matches & a fine of Rs. 30,000 is imposed on him as provided in Article 50-1-a & 58 of the AIFF Disciplinary Code, respectively for the use of abusive language against the referees decision,” the AIFF said.

The decisions were taken by the federation’s disciplinary committee which met at the Football House here.

Sen, after overseeing his side’s win in their first match of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League qualifiers against Tampines Rovers at home (Jan 27), wasn’t keen to play an I-League match against DSK Shivajians (Jan 30). Sen’s side had to fly out to China for their second qualifying round on February 2.

Sen had asked the AIFF to reschedule the match as he wanted his players to get a much needed rest. But the AIFF did not entertain the request made by Sen, which led him to lash out at the federation.

Following his outburst, a show cause notice was issued to the Mohun Bagan coach Sen by the AIFF.
