Bangalore: A day after the police and protesters opposing the amended Citizenship Act clashed in Jamia Millia Islamia and the areas surrounding it, students from various institutions across the country took out rallies in support, including those from All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO) in Bengaluru on Monday.
Condemning the violence which had erupted in the area surrounding Jamia on December 15 afternoon in which students were injured as the police resorted to lathi-charge and firing of teargas shells the AIDSO staged a massive protest in front of Town Hall in Bengaluru.
Over hundreds of students participated in the protests.
Addressing the gathering, All India President of AIDSO, V.N Rajashekhar said, “The students of Jamia Milia Islamia have time and again declared their resolve to continue the movement peacefully, undauntedly, on pretext of violence by some fringe elements, the police have barged into the campus and fired teargas shells on protesting students which has lead to serious casualties.
Mr. Rajashekhar stated that this marks the “Black Day” in the history of student’s movements. We hold high the democratic right to protest! The protest at JMI was against the anti-people draconian Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Ajay Kamath, State Secretary of AIDSO said that this protest was one of the voices of many protests reverberating across the country, we strongly urge upon the government to immediately cease their brutal attacks on protesting students.
Further, AIDSO demanded the police investigation to nab the fringe elements and to take action on police personnel responsible for the ghastly attack.
