AIADMK observes bandh in Puducherry

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) is observing a 12-hour bandh in all four regions of Puducherry — Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam, on Saturday, in protest against the ‘false case’ imposed on party leader Jayalalithaa, who has been convicted in an illegal assets case.

The bandh commenced from 6 am today in protest against the ‘false case’ imposed on Jayalalithaa and her ‘wrongful imprisonment’.

On September 27, a special court in Bangalore had sentenced former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa to four years in prison and slapped a Rs 100 crore fine on her in the Rs 66.65 crore disproportionate assets case.

During her first tenure (1991-96) as chief minister, Jayalalithaa drew Re 1 as salary. The charge against her was that her assets rose from about Rs 3 crore in 1991 to Rs 66 crore in just five years.

The disproportionate assets case saw several twists and turns. When the AIADMK returned to power in 2001, several witnesses turned hostile.
