Agriculture Minister stresses on pulses, organic farming

Agartala: Minister of State for Agriculture Mohanbhai Kalyanjibhai Kundariya has urged the farmers to shift from paddy to pulses and organic farming for making better profits.

Speaking to reports after meeting Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, Kundariya said that such a move would also benefit the common people in terms of health.

“India has huge production of paddy, so we are trying to divert farmers toward pulses and organic farming. Both the Centre and the state governments are making efforts to convince the farmers to shift from paddy to pulses and organic farming, so that not only farmers but the common people will also be benefited,” he said.

On the issue of fertiliser crisis in northeastern states, the minister said, “The process is on to commission a gas-based fertiliser plant in Tripura. The proposed fertiliser factory would meet the fertiliser shortages in the northeastern states, which are agriculture-based states.”

Kundariya had earlier visited the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Complex of the northeastern region at Lembuchara to attend an exhibition of new variety of seeds, crops and technology of various crops developed by the ICAR.

The minister also distributed new varieties of seeds, fish breeds and piglets among progressive farmers.

Kundariya arrived here Friday on a three-day visit to Tripura.
