After showers, city under water

Ludhiana, July 01: The first pre-monsoon shower in the city has highlighted the Municipal Corporations’ preparedness for the rains. A patch of Chandigarh road caved in on Tuesday morning. This road was constructed about a year ago. Now, temporary repair work is being done on the spot.

Besides, water-logging was reported in many areas. Field Ganj, Kitchlu Nagar, Purana Bazar, Kareempura and Talaab Bazaar remained water-logged for more than four hours.

In most areas, overflowing sewers added to the problem. Chocked sewer lines, sources said, cause the overflow.

Talaab Bazar, for example, floods every monsoon as the nallah in the area hasn’t been cleaned for years.

Now, with the arrival of the monsoons, the MC can do little but watch rain wreck havoc, as the nallahs in the city, including the Buddha Nallah, have not been cleaned.

meeting in the first week of June asking the MC to ensure cleanliness of all the nallahs by the end of the month. So far, only the Field Ganj Nallah has been cleaned (80 per cent) — that too only after Chief Parliamentary Secretary Harish Rai Dhanda and Deputy Speaker Satpal Gosain constantly monitored the work.

“Most of the drains in the inner city are 80 per cent chocked due to which water overflows whenever it rains. One month should be dedicated only for the cleanliness of these nallahs,” Dhanda said. “Even if MC starts cleaning them now, many areas can be saved from getting water-logged.”
