After-hours joyride leaves student dead

Hyderabad, December 14: An engineering college student died while three others suffered severe injuries after they rammed their car into a roadside tree in Madhapur in the wee hours of

Sunday. A group of five friends were returning from a late-night birthday bash when the accident took place. The youngsters are engineering students of various colleges located on the city outskirts and hail from different localities in the city, police said. The five are V Rohit Reddy, Vicky, Arjun Goud, Shamkukh Goud and Nitin Reddy. On Saturday night, they set out for

Kukatpally on a four-wheeler to celebrate a friend’s birthday.

“After the party, they set out on a pleasure ride at around 1 am. As the

roads were empty, the youngsters were reportedly going at high speed,” Madhapur police sub-inspector M Ramachander said. They were proceeding from Jubilee Hills to Kavuri Hills when Nitin Reddy, who was driving the vehicle, lost control at the steep curve near Vittal Rao Nagar and rammed into a roadside banyan tree, the SI said. Except for Vicky, who was seated

behind Nitin Reddy, all the other four suffered severe injuries and were

shifted to a private hospital in Ameerpet. Rohit Reddy, who was seated behind

the driver, succumbed to severe head injuries while undergoing treatment at around 7.30 am. Rohit was a second year student of Malla Reddy Engineering

College, police said. Nitin’s condition is said to be critical. Going by the condition of the damaged car, it seems that the youngsters were driving at high speed, Ramachander said adding that they are yet to ascertain whether the person driving the vehicle was drunk. Madhapur police registered a case

under Section 304-a (causing death by negligence) after a complaint was registered by Vicky.
