After drought threat, Gujarat faces flood

Ahmedabad, July 24: Till a few weeks ago, Gujarat was on the verge of drought. But continuous rainfall over the last 10 days has resulted in a complete reversal of situation and most parts of the state are now facing a flood-like situation.

The worst affected places are Junagarh, Verawal, Porbandar and Surat. The water-level in Veraval has risen so much that most low-lying areas have been left inundated.

In Junagarh, it is feared that Sudarshan Dam may be damaged. As a precautionary measure, villages in Bhavnath area have been evacuated. All roads leading to Bhavnath have also been blocked to prevent people from entering the danger zone.

Meanwhile, a very rough Arabian Sea warning by the weather office has given Surat district officials quite a scare. If high tides in the Arabian Sea hit the coast, the city could witness a repeat of the 2006 floods.

Not taking any chances, the Surat Municipal Corporation and the district administration officials have already started evacuating residents from the low-lying areas.
