Afridi quit over match fixing?

Karachi, August 31: It is learnt that the team management which Afridi was a key member of, did not want players to be dealing with Azhar and Mazhar Majeed, the two men, who were paid to fix no-balls in yesterday’s Lord’s Test by News of the World newspaper.

It can be recalled that Afridi gave up the Test captaincy after the Lord’s Test against Australia in July. On July 27, this correspondent reported that players were discouraged from dealing with outsiders.

Exactly one month later, Pakistan cricket is the object of ridicule once again in spot fixing controversy concerning skipper Salman Butt, senior player Kamran Akmal, fast bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir.

Limited overs captain Afridi refused to comment on the current controversy, but sources say that he is unhappy over the inclusion of certain players picked in his ODI squad for the forthcoming series against England.

Three days after this correspondent’s story was published, he got a call from a person who claimed he was a lawyer for the Majeed brothers and threatened to arrest him before hanging up.
