Kabul, March 30: A militant attack has claimed the lives of two foreign troops in eastern Afghanistan, bringing to 106 the number of US-led soldiers killed in the war-ravaged country this year.
NATO’s International Security Assistance Force said in a statement released Wednesday that the soldiers were killed Tuesday, Xinhua reported.
“Two International Security Assistance Force service members died following an insurgent attack in eastern Afghanistan yesterday,” the statement said without revealing the nationality of the soldier.
Meanwhile, in separate attacks three other US-led soldiers lost their lives in eastern Afghanistan on Tuesday.
Fighting between militants and foreign forces has recently intensified in eastern Afghanistan, including Nuristan province.
The death toll of the US-led forces in 2010 stood at 711, making the year the deadliest for foreign forces in Afghanistan since the start of the war.
The rising number of foreign casualties has stoked opposition to the Afghan war in the NATO member states as well as in other countries that have contributed troops to the mission.
NATO has admitted to the rising power of militants in Afghanistan despite the increasing presence of US-led forces in the war-hit country, which currently stands at 150,000.
