Kabul, September 10: The final results of Afghanistan’s presidential election are expected to be released with delay, the Electoral Complaints Commission says.
The commission mainly appointed by the United Nations, said the results are not likely to be released on September 17 because tallying the votes is taking too long.
It also added that the final results could not be ratified until all complaints were reviewed.
The commission decided to launch the probe after defeated candidates and critics accused President Hamid Karzai of vote-rigging.
The latest results show Karzai wining 54 percent of the votes with almost 92 percent of polling stations counted. This gives him enough votes to win without a run-off.
Karzai’s main challenger, former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah has won over 28-percent of the votes. Abdullah has accused the electoral commission of allowing irregularities in favor of Karzai.
