Afghan sells UN aid supplies for $20,000

Kabul, January 22: An Afghan man has illegally sold humanitarian aid supplies from the UN’s World Food Programme agency for one million Afghanis ($20,000), the country’s national security service has said.

The man sold 1,212 batches of wheat, 224 boxes containing vegetable oil, 145 boxes with sugar and 12 bags with salt at a market in Kalat, the administrative centre of the Zabol province said Wednesday.

Security officials detained the man, who had received the items from the UN aid agency for free distribution. Humanitarian food supplies, especially flour, are often sold in Afghanistan due to corruption among officials distributing them.
