Afghan policeman kills US troops

Kabul, April 04: NATO says an assailant wearing an Afghan police uniform has shot dead at least two US soldiers inside a military compound in the country’s north.

The Western military alliance says the incident took place in Faryab Province,

“According to initial reporting, an individual in an Afghan border police uniform fired on the ISAF members inside a compound,” NATO said in a statement.

“The individual who fired the shots fled the scene,” it added.

The identity of the deceased soldiers has not been revealed yet. The Western military alliance is to run an investigation into the case.

However, Afghan officials have confirmed the attacker was a border guard and said the victims were Americans.

At least 113 US-led foreign troops have been killed in Afghanistan since the beginning of 2011.

Afghan police officers and soldiers have killed several American soldiers in various parts of country over the past months.

Afghans say US-led foreign forces disregard Afghan culture and insult their religious sensitivities

The death toll of the US-led forces in 2010 stood at 711, making the year the deadliest for foreign forces in Afghanistan since the start of the war.

The rising number of foreign casualties has stoked opposition to the Afghan war in NATO member states as well as in other countries that have contributed troops to the mission.

NATO has admitted that the power of militants in Afghanistan is on the rise despite the presence of 150,000 US-led forces in the war-hit country.
