Afghan held in Delhi, one kg heroin seized

New Delhi: An Afghan national, said to be a member of an international drugs cartel, has been arrested here and over one kg of fine quality heroin seized from him, police said on Tuesday.

Police said Qari Mohammad Hanif, 40, used two Afghanistan passports to smuggle heroin into India. He had visited India five times since May 2017.

“Hanif was held on Friday when he came to hand over heroin to peddlers in Mehrauli area. He told police that he supplied heroin to dealers in Delhi and the National Capital Region and adjoining states.

These dealers supply heroin at rave parties and other events,” Deputy Commissioner of Police P.S. Kushwah said.

More than 575 gm of drugs were seized from his rented flat in Lajpat Nagar, the official said.

A postgraduate in law, Hanif had a government job in Afghanistan but left his job to join the drugs cartel when he met Jabatur, the kingpin of an international drug cartel, in March 2017 in Jalalabad.

This man offered Hanif $800 per visit for smuggling heroin pellets into India.

Hanif supplied over three kg heroin pellets, valued at over Rs 6 crore in the international market, during his earlier visits to India, police said.
