Affidavit clashes with fundamental rights: Maulana Mahmood Madani

New Delhi: Secretary Jamiat Ulama Hind Maulana Mahmood Madani strongly opposed the affidavit filed by the central government against the minority status given to Jamia Millia Islamia by NCMEI and said that the affidavit clashes with the fundamental rights guaranteed by the constitution. Maulana Madani said Jamia Millia is historically a minority institution by name and status which cannot be changed just because of government funding.

Jamia Millia Islamia’s foundation was laid by Hazrat Shaikhul Hind Mahmood Hasan Deobandi in Aligarh with his own hands. Teachers of the Jamia including late Dr Zakir Husain toiled hard to develop the institution. In 2011 National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) accepted its minority status. Maulana Madani said government’s stand directly clashes with section 30 (2) of the constitution, which refrains from prejudice in providing the fund to minority institutions. He urged the central government to review its move and retain previous government’s stand.
