Accused hurls slipper at judge

Ghaziabad, March 02: Frustrated over the delay in disposal of his case, an accused, arrested six months ago on charges of theft, on Tuesday hurled his footwear at a judge here on Tuesay.

The slipper hit Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Kiran Bala, who is hearing the theft case, but she was not injured.

Twentythree-year-old Karan Bahadur, who hailed from Nepal, was immediately overpowered by lawyers and litigants present in the court.

He was also beaten up and handed over to police, court officials and eye-witnesses said.

A case was registered against him in Kavi Nagar Police Station at the behest of the court.

The judge took serious view of the incident and hauled up the accused for contempt of the court.

She awarded one-month rigorous imprisonment to him besides slapping a fine of Rs 200.

Bahadur was arrested six months ago in connection with a theft case and had been in judicial custody since then.

Judicial officers and lawyers strongly condemned the incident and demanded foolproof security for judges.

Advocate Sanjay Tyagi wrote a letter to the Chief Justice of India demanding adequate security for judges.

This appeared to be the first incident of an accused hurling his footwear at a judge in UP.
