If you’ve ever felt unsure about your outfit choice, you’re not the only guy. Getting your personal style right and choosing the things that look best can be tricky. But something great happened this week when hundreds of women (and some men) got together on one reddit thread to talk style: “Ladies, what type of outfit/clothing looks the sexiest clothes on men?” the thread asked. What a gift.
Here’s what the women of reddit had to say about which clothes make dudes look best.
Your clothes should fit your body—period
“In my opinion, it’s more important that clothing fits really well than be a particular style,” answered srhizbth731. “That’s what’s really going to make you look fantastic. What I objectively think looks great is either a well tailored suit or the classic ‘fitted button-up with the sleeves rolled up’ thing.” (If you’re tired of buying the wrong jeans and still can’t find ones that fit your legs, follow this advice.)
Others agreed on this point.
“Wearing clothes that fit is almost always the number one suggestion for guys and an easy fix, yet sooooo many dudes protest it. I’ll never understand it,” Ayyyyyymaaan wrote. “If you wanna be buried in your cargo shorts and graphic tees, that’s your choice.”
Don’t let your pants fall down
From steingrrrl: “Finally, wear a belt! And if you’re wearing a black belt, match it with black shoes, and the same rule applies to brown.”
That last part’s a little flexible, but overall that’s one rule you can’t slack on: Unless you’re wearing athletic shorts or a suit, you should probably be wearing a belt.
A good tee goes a long way
From ciabella88: “I love when a guy wears a nice fitting basic black tee, does it for me every time.” (Here’s what you’ll need to know when you’re shopping for your next one.)
Get some nicer outerwear that’s not your old puffy jacket
From allthebacon_and_eggs: “Guys in sexy, cozy winter coats. Peacoats are a winner for me and immediately make me want to snuggle up.” (Dude, good news: Here are 18 of them.)
Keep wearing your henley
Yespotatoes wrote: “A form-fitting henley with the top button unbuttoned.”
Your shoes and accessories are as important as the rest of our clothes
“Well fitting chino, nice shirt-tucked in, sleeves rolled towards the elbows. Showing a very nice wrist watch,” blacchic wrote. “Suede/leather Chukka boots. Makes me weak at the knees-always.”
It’s easy to forget about the details. Buy a watch you can afford that’s just as stylish, like this Timex. As for the boots, try something like these with jeans and chinos.
Make sure to roll up your sleeves
Even guys weighed in on what women said they liked about their outfits. “My wife said one of the times she was the most turned on is when she was watching me fix a light switch in the bathroom,” Spider-Ian wrote. “I was wearing jeans, white t-shirt and flannel with rolled up sleeves. She later confessed the rolled up sleeves are sexy because it looks like we mean business.”
Simple statement pieces are key. For a white tee, go with this Alternative crew from Alternative ($7.58, Buy It Here). And pair it with a flannel like this new red and gray one from Mizzen + Main ($130, Buy It Here). Or, go with one of these from Patagonia, Grayers, or Filson.
Buy that jacket you like
From ayyypokkai: “You can never go wrong with black or dark colors. A fancy jacket with something simple underneath would make you look good with minimal effort. Also, please do wear pants that fit well.“
With the jacket, don’t go too “fancy,” though. We’d recommend: a denim jacket ($90, Buy It Here) or a bomber jacket ($298, Buy It Here).
Have a good suit on standby
“A well-tailored suit,” operarose wrote. “Gentlemen, it’s like lingerie. Invest in at least one and your life will change.” (Now don’t wait to get one.)
Wear sneakers that you don’t use for deadlifts
From ravekitt: “I don’t know if someone has said this, but wear decent shoes and keep them relatively well maintained. I see a lot of younger guys wearing nice casual clothing but then pairing it with their kinda worn out gym shoes. Nice sneakers can work well with the right outfit but I think you need to make a distinction between casual sneakers and actual workout gym shoes.”
