Hyderabad, January 29: Exposing the corrupt activities and functioning of middlemen in the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), a surprise check by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials on an RTA office in the city unearthed more than Rs 1.06 lakh from the office and the middlemen.
On specific information of corrupt practices and irregularities in the South Zone RTA office, ACB officials raided it on Wednesday evening and recovered the amount.
While Rs 14,100 was recovered from beneath a table in the administrative office, Rs 2,250 was found in the computer server room. A sum of Rs 88,950 was seized from 14 private persons on the office premises.
“These people are working as middlemen between the RTA officials and customers against government rules. They collect the illegal gratification which is subsequently shared by the RTA staff,’’ an official release said on Thursday.
Further investigations are on.
Meanwhile, an ACB court sentenced former assistant director of Sports Authority of AP, Gacchibowli, Ranga Reddy district, R Venkateswara Rao to two years rigorous imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs 3,000 for indulging in corruption.
He was trapped by the ACB officials in 2003 when he took Rs 10,000 from a person to hand over a cheque pertaining to final settlement of catering charges.
The tax inspector of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, Secunderabad, L Narsing Rao was dismissed from service by the GHMC Commissioner following his conviction in an ACB case.
Narsing Rao was convicted and sentenced by an ACB court for taking a bribe of Rs 2,500 from a person for getting the property transferred in the name of his daughter.
