ABVP students stage rasta roko at OU

Hyderabad, July 28: In what appears to be a counterdefensive measure to avoid disciplinary action by the Osmania Law College authorities, the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad members of the college held a demonstration alleging that some of the senior students belonging to the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) had indulged in ragging. Demanding suspension of some students belonging to the NSUI, who were involved in a clash on July 24, ABVP student members carried out fierce protests resulting in a tense situation at the college.

The rivalry between the two groups came to fore with the clash that took place on that day, as one of the ABVP members removed an NSUI banner welcoming freshers to the campus.

The Osmania University officials said that the second-year students, Rahul Reddy and Anjaneyulu of the five-year LLB course attacked a third year student Saideshwar Rao of the same course. As a result, the latter suffered minor injuries.

Students said that this resulted in a fight between the members leading to a student being injured. Following the incident, two of the juniors were arrested on that day.

AVBP students allege that the fight took place after provocation by senior students and submitted a representation to the principal saying that it was a case of ragging. They even held a rasta roko demanding the release of the arrested students.

“The college has initiated disciplinary action and suspended Rahul Reddy and Anjaneyulu for 15 days pending enquiry. The University has taken a stern view of the matter and a committee has been constituted to inquire in to the incident,” University Registrar YC Venudhar said. He also stated that the administration had not agreed to the demands of the ABVP students.

Meanwhile, the Osmania University Police official Kishtaiah said that they had not arrested anyone in Monday’s protest.
