Mumbai, October 31: A gangster, facing several cases of extortion and robbery, was killed allegedly in a shoot-out with police in suburban Chembur here today, police said.
Mangesh Narkar (34), a history sheeter, was recently sent in judicial custody in connection with firing on a hotel-owner for extortion.
On October 6, he and co-accused Sachin Khambe gave the police the slip while being taken to Nashik Central Prison.
Khambe was re-arrested immediately, but Narkar could not be traced.
Crime branch officials laid a trap for Narkar today after receiving a tip-off that he would be coming to Central Avenue Road, near Central Bank of India in Chembur, to collect ransom from a local trader.
Narkar arrived there at 4 AM, and allegedly fired at the police team in an attempt to escape.
