About 300 passengers airlifted from Jammu to Srinagar

Jammu, January 21: About 300 passengers were today airlifted to Srinagar from Jammu technical airport in the special aircraft of Indian Air Force here, official spokesman said.

“The Government administration has arranged IAF aircraft to airlift the stranded passengers in Jammu and two sorties have left for Valley with 300 passengers in the morning,” S N Acharya, officiating spokesman, Ministry of Defence told UNI.

He said in the first sortie of AN-32, 50 passengers were airlifted and in the second sortie of IL-76, 250 passengers were airlifted to the Valley.

“The sorties also airlifted 250 army personnel to Jammu, who were stranded in Srinagar,” he added.

Mr Acharya said two more sorties would be pressed into service and about 500 passengers would be sent back to their native places.

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained closed for the third consecutive day, police spokesman said.

“Only stranded vehicles on the highway, are being allowed to move slowly on the highway and no fresh vehicle was given permission to ply on the road due to slippery conditions and the snow,” he added.

He said the highway is closed from both the sides for the fresh vehicles.
