By setting up 100 SHE teams, Hyderabad Police has made an attempt to check incidents of harassment of women in public places are baffled as most of the miscreants are senior in age.
Now, Police are in a dilemma on how to counsel these not-so-young mischief maker.
Krishna Rao (name changed), a 51-year-old businessman from KPHB came on a bike and stopped right in front of the woman cop at the bus stop. After fixing his eyes on her for a few seconds, Rao asked her to get on his bike and he was at once rounded up by cops standing within spitting distance.
The senior-most wrongdoer, Chandrasekhar (name changed), is a 68-year-old retired state government employee has his wife, children and even grandchildren living with him.
“There were other people at the bus stop and the offender publicly misbehaved with a woman. We have booked him under the City Police Act and he will be counselled in the presence of his family members,” Cyberabad DCP and supervisor of SHE teams R Rama Rajeswari said.
For the past two months about 100 eve-teasers were booked under section 290 (public nuisance) and section 70(C) of City Police Act.
D Kavita, Central Crime Station (CCS) ACP said that out of the 100 offenders nabbed so far, about 20 are aged 50 years plus.
In addition to directly asking for sexual favours, some senior citizens were held for ‘flashing’ in public and misbehaving with women in crowded buses, stated ACP.
Majority of senior citizens arrested by SHE teams were blue collar workers and arrested for passing lewd comments against women.
“We are in consultation with some organisations to get professional counselling for such offenders in the presence of their family members, including wife, to bring changes in their behaviour,” DCP Rama Rajeswari said.
