Abbott backs Gillard on Libya no-fly zone

New York, March 11: Military intervention and a UN no-fly zone in Libya should be considered, federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says.

“It’s one of the things that ought to be considered. That’s what (Prime Minister) Julia Gillard said in the parliament last week and I was happy to support her on that,” Mr Abbott told Channel 9 today.

Mr Abbott said that while these issues needed further analysis, there was no doubt about the need for reform in strife-torn Libya.

“The important thing is that the people of Libya deserve reform not repression,” he said. “I think Colonel Gaddafi and his crew have well and truly forfeited any legitimacy and I think that the sooner we have a more democratic form of government in Libya the better.”

Ms Gillard has said the question of a no-fly zone is one for the United Nations Security Council.

Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd has been a vocal advocate of the no-fly zone option currently being considered by members of the security council.
