Aadhaar, voter ID, passport not proof of citizenship: Govt

NEW DELHI: Amidst the ongoing protest across the country against the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act along with the impending NRC, top government officials clarified that documents like Aadhaar, voter ID card and passport won’t prove citizenship.

According to the New Indian Express, the official responded in return of a query inquiring about documents required to prove citizenship for NRC.

The clarification however, was different from the “government document” that emerged on social media that indicates voter IDs be treated as proof of citizenship.

Terming as “pre-mature” to talk about NRC, the official explained saying:

“These (voter ID, Aadhaar and passport) are either travel documents or documents to show residency in India.”

Hours later, the Union Home Ministry put out tweets in a bid to quell and address the doubts related to CAA and NRC.

Parts of the document directly contradict Amit Shah’s statement on CAA-NRC.

On Tuesday, Amit Shah, in a media interview stated that Aadhaar, voter card and other government documents do not prove citizenship. “These do not decide citizenship,” said Shah. “And Aadhaar does not decide citizenship at all.
