93 left in fray, two elected opposed to Ktk upper house

Bangalore, December 04:Ruling BJP and opposition Congress today won a seat each in the elections being held to 25 seats of Karnataka Legislative Council from local bodies, when their nominees were declared elected uncontested, while 93 candidates will face the ballot on December 18 for the remaining 23 seats.

Pratapchandra Shetty (Congress) and Srinivas Poojary of the BJP were elected unopposed in Dakshina Kannada district, which has two constituencies after four nominees out of the six, who had filed papers withdrew from the contest, Joint Chief Electoral Officer B V Kulkarni told reporters here.

In all 68 candidates opted out of contest on the last day of withdrawal of nominations.

Congress and JDS have forged an electoral tie-up to fight BJP in the elections and Congress has conceded eight seats to JDS out of 25.
