Centre to construct 1 lakh anganwadis each year for 4 years

New Delhi: The Centre has decided to construct one lakh anganwadi centres (AWCs) every year over the next four years so that four lakh such centres have their own children-friendly buildings by 2019.

The earlier proposal was to set up 50 thousand AWCs per year in 2,534 most backward blocks in 11 states which have high malnutrition.

Therefore, a need was felt to include other areas also for the construction of AWC buildings under the convergence of MGNREGA and ICDS.

There are 13 lakh four thousand anganwadis across the country of which more than 12 lakh do not have their own buildings.
