Hyderabad: GHMC, Dept. of Police and Federation of NGOs organized a one day seminar to discuss about making Hyderabad a beggar free city. They suggested that the genuine beggars should be identified and steps should be taken for their rehabilitation and also to wipeout fake beggars. These thoughts were expressed by Mr. B. Ram Mohan, Mayor of GHMC in a one day seminar cum workshop held yesterday. He said that 90% of the beggars are fake. They are healthy and have other sources of income and even then they prefer to beg. They are creating traffic problems at the crossroads. He appealed to the people not to help fake beggars. A special campaign would be launched to eradicate beggary from the city and Hyderabad would be made a beggar free city. He also said that there is no organization to take care of the genuine beggars. GHMC in collaboration with social organizations will arrange for their food and accommodation. An attempt would be made to generate employment opportunities for them.
The seminar was attended by Addl. Commissioner of GHMC, Mr. Bhaskarachari, Zonal Commissioner, Surendra Mohan, Dy. Commissioner, Mr. Ashok Samrat, Mr. G. Ramaiah, Chairman of Federation of NGOs and others.
It may be mentioned that there are self-styled beggars in the city who are millionaires and they lend money to the needy persons charging heavy interests.
