The Tamil Nadu coast is bracing for a possible cyclone as a depression over the Bay of Bengal is set to make landfall later on Monday.
Met officials said the depression is 110 kilometres away from land and is expected to hit the eastern coast between 12 to 2:30pm close to Puducherry.
“In the next 12 hours, we expect it to become a deep depression. It may possibly result in a cyclone storm later,” deputy director of the meteorological department, SR Ramanan told ANI.
The low-pressure area-turned-depression is presently 300km south-east from the Puducherry coast and is likely to move north-west.
Most parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have been experiencing heavy rain over the last two days. Schools and colleges remained shut in the three districts of Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur.
