8 surrender in court for panchayat chief’s murder

Kancheepuram, June 29: Eight persons surrendered before a local court in Tindivanam this morning in connection with the brutal murder of Oorapakkam Village Panchayat President G N R Kumar (47) who was hacked to death by a gang on the Grand Southern Trunk Road at Oorapakkam on June 27.

Police said here, Prakash (30), Satish (26), Shanmugam (51), Satish (24), Karthik (24),Sandeep (24),Ragesh (25) and Manok (23) surrendered before the II Judicial Magistrate Court in connection with the murder. The court remanded them in 15 days of custody. They were later taken to the Puzhal Central Prison in Chennai.

Police said they expected to take custody of the accused in a day or two for interrogation.

Eight special police teams were formed to track down the killers of Kumar.

On the fateful day, Kumar was chatting with his friend N S Dillibabu, former president of the Karanaipuducheri Village Panchayat, in a car near the Karanaipuducheri-GST Road Junction when seven people who came in a car hurled country-made bombs at the vehicle. Kumar jumped out and tried to flee. The lungi-clad assailants chased and attacked him with lethal weapons. Kumar succumbed to deep cuts on his head. Mr Dillibabu, who sustained injuries on his hands and was in a state of shock was rushed to a nearby hospital.
