8 kg narcotics seized at airport

Hyderabad, September 19: A youth from Orissa was held at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport here for possessing 8.9 kg drugs worth Rs 90 lakh in the international market, a senior Directorate of Revenue Intelligence official said today.

Acting on an intelligence input, DRI officials yesterday intercepted the 26-year-old youth while he was about to board a flight to Bangkok. Ketamine powder was found concealed in specially made cavities of wooden frames of jewellery boxes he was carrying, DRI (Hyderabad) Additional Director Anil K Nigam said.

The man hails from Balasore in Orissa. He was produced before the Special Judge for Economic Offences today and has been sent to judicial remand till September 30, Nigam said.

Ketamine, a drug used in human and veterinary medicine, is a prohibited substance under Foreign Trade Policy and can be exported only if permitted by Narcotics Commissioner of India.
