Nagpur, January 14: Neurosurgeons at the super speciality hospital attached to the Nagpur Medical College extracted a knife dug inside a human skull for five days thus saving the life of Vikki Sangote, 22, of Yavatmal, Maharashtra.
It took a five-hour-long surgery to extract the knife from the skull.
Vikki, who was mentally disturbed, had dug the knife into his own skull in an attempt to commit suicide, doctors said.
Says Dr Pramod Giri, head of the neurosurgery dept: “It is almost next to impossible for a patient to survive with an eight-inch knife inside a skull for five days. The knife which had entered the skull had almost touched his pituitary gland, but it was a miracle that not a single nerve was cut.”
The surgeons resorted to traniotomy surgery to remove the knife without damaging the nerves.
Vikki was brought in a critical condition on Friday evening to the Nagpur Medical College after which he was shifted to the super speciality hospital the next day, where the surgery was performed.
